Nomenclature
SUMMARY
Trees to 10 m. Branchlets 5 cm below terminal bud ca. 1.5-3 mm in diam., with extremely short (< 0.1 mm), rather inconspicuous appressed hairs, ±dense immediately below terminal bud but very quickly becoming sparse to glabrous; terminal buds elongate, 3.5-8 mm long and ca. 1 mm thick, densely covered with short, appressed, whitish or pale copper colored hairs.
Petioles 6-15 mm long, ca. 1-2 mm thick. Leaves alternate, lanceolate to lanceolate elliptic, widest usually slightly below the middle, 6-20 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, 2.7-4 times longer than wide, tip acuminate, base acute to broadly attenuate, the very base usually attenuate to acute, margin flat or nearly so, midrib and secondary veins somewhat impressed above, midrib prominent below, secondary veins slightly prominent below, (4-)5-7 pairs, diverging at 25-45°, tertiary venation ±scalariform, ±level above, level to slightly raised. Indument on the lamina sparse to absent, if present consisting of short, appressed hairs, plus slightly longer hairs (0.2-0.3 mm) in the axils of secondary veins, most of them spreading from midrib and veins. Gland dots occasionally visible, indistinct.
Inflorescences usually inserted in the axils of cataphylls, mostly at the base of the new growth, occasionally a few in the axils of young leaves, 2.5-15 cm long, much shorter to slightly longer than the foliage leaves; lateral branches 0-8 below terminal cluster of cymes, branched 0-2 times, indument consisting of ±short, ±appressed hairs, ±sparse but often slightly denser on receptacle. Pedicels 3-10 mm long.
Flowers 5.5-8 mm in diam., tepals ±elongate elliptic to obovate-elliptic, 2-3 mm long and 1.5-2 mm wide, covered with fine papillae on the adaxial surface. Stamens ca. 1-1.5 mm long including the short filament, anthers distinctly papillose, in the two outer whorls mostly ±pentagonal with an (acute to) obtuse to broadly rounded sterile tip, in the third whorl roundish obtrapeziform with a rounded to truncate tip. Staminodes thickish, papillose on abaxial side, often with a small glandular patch on adaxial side, almost free. Pistil ca. 2 mm long, glabrous, style ca. as long as the ovary or slightly shorter. Receptacle shallowly bowl shaped to cup shaped, glabrous or with some tightly appressed, short hairs inside.
Fruit insufficiently known; berry (mature?) ca. 1.5 cm long, ca. 1 cm in diam., cupule shallowly bowl shaped on a slightly but increasingly thickened pedicel.
Known only from primary rainforest in the states of Paraná and São Paulo, Brazil.
