Lectotype (designated by van der Werff, 2002a: 580): “Prunifera arbor, fructu maximo pyriformi viridi, pericarpio esculento butyraceo nucleum unicum maximum nullo ossiculo tectum, cingente. The Avocado or Alegator pear-tree,” in Sloane (A Voyage to the Islandas Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica, vol. 2.: 132, t. 222, fig. 2. 1725). Original material: JAMAICA. Herb. Sloane Vol. VII: 77 (BM-SL 000594115).
Miscellaneous information:
The specimen on linnean-online.org, LINN-H 707.16, "de'l Isle de France" cannot be the type.
van der Werff (Novon 12: 580. 2002.) pointed out that Kopp (1966: 17) had designated the description in Clusius (1601: 2) as lectotype of Laurus persea. However, since descriptions are not accepted as lectotypes, according to Art. 8.1 of ICN (McNeill et al., 2012), he designated the illustration in Sloane (1725) as lectotype.
